The universe as seen by the telescopes of the European Southern Observatory

This talk will be a visual feast of some of the wonders of the night skyas imaged by the telescopes of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).  ESO runs the world’s premier optical observatory, based in the high, dry Atacama Desert of Chile.  Ireland is hoping to join ESO and be a part of the international endeavour that aims to build the world’s largest optical telescope - the 39m diameter European Extremely Large Telescope. The talk will be given by Professor Michael Burton, Director of the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium - and part-time Cavan resident!  Michael recently arrived in Ireland from Australia where he had been running telescopes all over the world, from the outback of Australia, to the Desert Mountains of Chile, to the vast ice plateau of Antarctica.
